History and Heritage of Georgia

Georgia’s earliest colonial history can be traced to the shores of Savannah where British colonists landed in 1733 to claim the area for King George II.

During the early 1800’s cotton was fast becoming the state’s major crop along with an increasing number of African slaves to work the large plantations.  Conflict between the North and South over slavery was one of the catalysts for the Civil War in the United States.

Pivotal during the American Civil War, Georgia is home to many historic war and battle sites right across the state from Atlanta to Savannah with the famous General Sherman’s March to the Sea.

Following the civil war and the state’s reconstruction the early 20th Century saw Georgia emerge as a largely rural, agricultural state, during which time the seeds of the civil rights movement were sown.  By the 1950’s the state was thriving following its participation in the World War II war effort and Atlanta was fast becoming a major centre of the emerging civil right movement led by its native Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Georgia’s ascent to the world stage captured international attention during the Atlanta’s hosting of the 1996 Summer Olympic Games which brought huge numbers of visitors to the state. Indeed, Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson is now the busiest airport in the world and home to the World’s largest air carrier – Delta Air Lines.

Across the state, artefacts, homes and sites have been preserved, museums created and guides employed to proudly show and highlight Georgia’s contribution to the history and culture of the United States.  A vast array of Georgia’s past and heritage is waiting to be explored.

Climate

The highest temperature recorded in Georgia is 112°, Fahrenheit. This record high was recorded on July 24, 1953 at Louisville. The lowest temperature in Georgia, -17°, was recorded on January 27, 1940 at CCC Camp.Monthly average temperatures range from a high of 92.2 degrees to a low of 32.6 degrees.A humid subtropical climate with mild winters and hot moist summers is characteristic of most of Georgia. The average annual precipitation varies from about 40" in central Georgia to more than 75" in northeast Georgia. One of two annual precipitation maxima occurs in February or March, when between 4" and 6" of rain may be expected because of the high seasonal incidence of cyclonic activity over the southeastern United States. The second maximum occurs in June and July, when precipitation from thunderstorm activity may bring 4" to 7" monthly.
The number of summer days when the temperature exceeds 90 degrees F are numerous, but in the mountain areas and the hilly Piedmont cool evenings bring welcome relief. Winters are mild, but significant variation occurs from south to north in Georgia. Snow cover lasting more than one or two days or exceeding 2" occurs only in the mountainous fringe of north Georgia. The great day-to-day variability in winter weather is caused by the interaction of polar and subtropical air masses. Atlanta's extreme low temperatures are rarely below 14 degrees F.

Due to this information you could choose the most available season for visiting Georgia! I add the link where you have a possibility to read more information about climate: http://www.climate-zone.com/climate/united-states/georgia/atlanta/

Geography of Georgia

Georgia is the largest state of the Mississippi River and has three main topographical areas. Extending inland from the coast is a low coastal plain that covers the southern half of the state. In mountainous N Georgia are the Appalachian Plateau, the valley and ridge province, and the Blue Ridge province. Bridging these two sections and embracing about one third of the state is the Piedmont foothill region in central Georgia. A number of islands, part of the Sea Islands chain, lie off Georgia's coastline.

The state is well drained by many rivers, including the Savannah, which forms the boundary with South Carolina; the Ocmulgee and the Oconee, which merge in the southeast to form the Altamaha; the Chattahoochee, which forms part of the Alabama boundary and joins with the Flint in the extreme southwest corner of the state to form the Apalachicola; and the Saint Marys, which rises in the large Okefenokee Swamp and forms part of the Georgia-Florida line.

The Georgia Mountains Region are part of the Blue Ridge mountains and begin in the northeast corner of Georgia. Brasstown Bald, the highest mountain in Georgia at 4,784 feet (1,458 m) above mean sea level, is part of the chain and sits in an area known as Wolfpen Ridge. Other mountains in Georgia include Rabun Bald, Arabia Mountain, Big Bald Mountain, Black Mountain, and Blood Mountain.
Stone Mountain, located in Stone Mountain, Georgia is a well-known mountain that has an elevation of 1,683 feet (513 m) amsl from its summit and 825 feet (251.5 m) above the surrounding plateau. The mountain is known for its geology and also for its enormous bas-relief depicting three Confederate leaders: Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. The bas-relief is the largest in the world. The most important cities are Atlanta, Columbus, Savannah, Macon, and Albany.
